(Auszug) Artificial Intelligence – A Blessing or Curse for Humanity?
James Cameron depicts a chilling dystopia and the violent end of mankind in his Terminator movies. In these films, by now a popular cultural standard, humans develop intelligent war machines that start to rebel against their creators in fear of their own existence.
Could this be a realistic scenario some day? Is this something we should be afraid of? Renown scientist and undisputed master of all things brainy Stephen Hawking voices his concerns in a BBC interview in 2014: „“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.“ Tesla and Space X founder Elon Musk shares Hawking’s reflections and publishes his concerns together with a number of experts in an open letter in 2015 „Research priorities for robust and beneficial intelligence“. How real are these fears? Are we heading towards a darker future?
Artificial Intelligence has slowly meandered into our daily routine. Sometimes openly, sometimes in a more concealed manner. People hardly realize how much of their everyday procedures are assisted by AI. Apple’s Siri is based on Artificial Intelligence. Facebook’s face detection is based on Artificial Intelligence. A car’s ability to automatically react to speed limits and road signs is made possible through artificial neural networks – ie. Artificial Intelligence. Google’s algorithms use AI technology, so does Twitter to detect and ideally block explicit content.
